Shelina Permalloo is an award-winning chef, restaurateur, author and television personality celebrated for bringing the vibrant flavours of Mauritian cuisine to the UK mainstream. Best known as the 2012 winner of BBC MasterChef, Shelina has built an impressive career defined by creativity, cultural storytelling and a passion for community through food.
Born and raised in Southampton to Mauritian parents, Shelina’s cooking is deeply inspired by her heritage, blending African, Indian, Chinese and European influences into bold, contemporary dishes. Following her MasterChef success, she published her acclaimed cookbook *Sunshine on a Plate*, which won the Gourmand Award for Best African Cookbook, followed by *The Sunshine Diet*.
In 2016, Shelina opened her celebrated restaurant, Lakaz Maman, in Southampton — one of the UK’s first Mauritian street food restaurants. Renowned for its vibrant flavours and warm hospitality, the restaurant has earned national recognition and praise from critics and diners alike. Shelina is also a regular face on British television and radio, appearing on programmes including *Saturday Kitchen*, *MasterChef*, *John & Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen* and BBC Radio 4’s *The Kitchen Cabinet*.
Alongside her culinary achievements, Shelina is a passionate advocate for diversity, inclusion and community engagement. Her work extends beyond the kitchen through charitable partnerships, mentoring initiatives and projects supporting families and young people.
